❓Have you heard of the 5 Types of ROI?

Hey Reader,

We’ve mentioned before that when we kick off with a new client, we ask a million questions about the intricacies of your author business.

We want to know your business processes and strategies, your genre, and your competition deeply.

But most importantly, we want to know you—and what matters to you.

Enter: The 5 types of ROI.

It’s our signature framework designed to help you articulate what you are prioritizing in your business right now, and why.

Depending on your personality, life circumstances, stage of business, and Strengths, you'll value some types of ROI more highly than others. Likewise, we say “what you are prioritizing in your business right now” because the way you prioritize these 5 types of ROI can shift over time, as you hit certain milestones or reassess your goals.

If you don’t know what type(s) of ROI you value most, you risk creating an author business that leaves you asking “All of this…for what?”

So without further ado, here are the 5 types of ROI:

  1. Positive emotions: Fundamentally, you want to feel good in your business. Maybe it's about creativity, productivity, collaboration, or joy for you—but at the end of the day, it has to feel fun and rewarding in order to feel worth it.
  2. Time: Your goal is to create as much unscheduled time as possible, so that you can build a richer, more well-rounded life outside your business. You might want to take more trips, spend more time with your family, pursue more hobbies, or finally be able to chill!
  3. Social capital: You care deeply about your reputation and being a leader in your genre. You want to be known and appreciated for your original ideas, unique characters, and stellar writing, and it might be important to you to have external indicators that you’re crushing it: Like hitting a list, receiving an award, or being selected for a prestigious book club.
  4. Impact: You want your writing to deeply impact your readers. You value creating experiences that shake up your readers’ inner worlds, inspire them to come together in community to discuss and grow from those experiences, and help them take solace in knowing an experience they thought was uniquely theirs is shared.
  5. Financial: Feeling safe and secure in your business finances matters to you, and ripples over into your personal finances. It might be a money goal that’s symbolic for you, or a literal dollar amount you’d like to make for a specific reason.

When we better understand your drivers and motivations, we can reflect them back to you over time, which leads to more aligned decision making in your business and makes our marching orders as business managers exponentially more clear.

And of course, you don't have to wait until you're our client to start thinking about what you're aiming for, right now.

Hit reply and tell us how you would prioritize the 5 types of ROI in your business today. Or if you’re confused, tell us that and we’ll provide some questions to give you a bit more clarity!

Cheers to having a business that aligns with what matters most to you -

Hey Reader, “Is there any risk to hiring a business manager from outside of the reader world?” That’s a real question we got when one of our earliest clients was in the process of hiring us. Our reply: It’s not only not a risk—it’s a major benefit. A quick story to illustrate...
