🤔 “Wait, do you do ANYTHING but write?!”

Hey Reader,

Do you remember when we said we would challenge you to push beyond your current thinking of what’s possible in your author business?

That continues today.

We recently heard a story from an author that made us laugh. She was at a signing with two of our clients and they were detailing everything we do for them in their businesses.

Upon hearing the full list, she said, “Wait, do you do anything besides write?!”

That’s the exact reaction we want when you hear about our work.

(In their defense, they actually do still do a lot—but it’s streamlined and only bubbles up to them when absolutely needed.)

Here’s an example:

We recently ran a combined sale of special editions + t-shirts for a client. At the risk of overwhelming you, here's a non-exhaustive list of everything that went into this:

  • Set up Shopify site
  • Figure out tax liabilities
  • Crunch numbers to ensure profitability
  • Find a US-based fulfillment company
  • Review and edit the fulfillment contract
  • Coordinate between the special edition printing company in China and the US fulfillment company to get special editions Stateside
  • Track packages all the way to fulfillment company
  • Pay fulfillment invoice
  • Find designer for t-shirt
  • Review design contract
  • Pay designer
  • Give feedback on design
  • Find reliable t-shirt printer
  • Decide t-shirt quantities
  • Coordinate t-shirt order
  • Pay t-shirt invoice
  • Get t-shirts shipped to shipping point of contact
  • Order shipping supplies
  • List items on Shopify
  • Take marketing photos
  • Market sale on all marketing platforms: Write copy, pull together photos, schedule, post, engage
  • Fulfill orders
  • Handle customer service issues

Our client’s involvement in all of this? She looked at the t-shirt design, said “I love it!!!” and went back to writing.

This is how it should be in your business.

Whatever you think you need your eye on—you probably don’t 😬

But if we need you, we will raise it to you.

This is a huge paradigm shift. It’s the difference between you needing to keep the train in motion vs. us keeping the train in motion... and it's what allows you to spend your time where you want.

And while you're at it, send this link to an author in your circle who might also be able to use some insight into their team and business structure! (Thank you!)

Hey Reader, “Is there any risk to hiring a business manager from outside of the reader world?” That’s a real question we got when one of our earliest clients was in the process of hiring us. Our reply: It’s not only not a risk—it’s a major benefit. (This was several years ago, so now we’ve been around the block even more 😅) Here’s our rationale: We are results-oriented in a way that we know you are, too—but that we don’t often see elsewhere in the author world. A quick story to illustrate...
